CHAIR'S STATEMENT: Publication of Ireland’s Provisional 2024 Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory

Marie Donnelly, the Chair of the Climate Change Advisory Council, has said the new provisional greenhouse gas emissions data published today by the EPA are disappointing, falling far short of government targets. While some progress is being made with an overall 2% decrease in national emissions because of positive actions being taken across society, the Government’s planned actions must be intensified, accelerated and fully delivered across all sectors.

Statement from the Chair of the Climate Change Advisory Council following the publication of the proposed EU 2040 Targets

Marie Donnelly, the Chair of the Climate Change Advisory Council, has welcomed the European Commission’s proposal to target the reduction of net greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040 with a view to achieving Union-wide climate-neutrality by 2050. While this will require a deep social and industrial transformation, it will improve EU and Irish energy security, industrial competitiveness and citizens' welfare, including reduced energy bills.

The Climate Change Advisory Council has said that the transport sector, which saw emissions decrease by an estimated 1.3% last year, needs urgent government intervention to support sustained emissions reductions and people making the switch to public transport.

Marie Donnelly launches Climate Change Advisory Council's Annual Review 2024.

Marie Donnelly, Chair of the Climate Change Advisory Council has launched the Annual Review 2024.

She said "We have the opportunity, now, to transform our society to a modern, climate resilient, biodiversity rich, environmentally sustainable and climate neutral economy or else pay the price of not meeting our commitments which will take crucial funds away from essential services. It is better to make the investments now for households, communities and businesses, rather than paying a large fine in a few years."
