The Climate Change Advisory Council has written to the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications in response to the submission of the Government's Draft Long Term Strategy on Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reductions.

As we approach the mid-point of the first carbon budget, the Climate Change Advisory Council remains concerned that the timelines for delivery of core measures within the Climate Action Plan are not progressing fast enough. In particular, we wish to highlight a number of elements of the planning system which will be crucial to address throughout the remainder of 2023.

2023 is as a critical year of delivery for national climate action to meet the ambition of the Climate Action and Low Carbon Development Act. Under the Act, Ireland’s cumulative emissions to the year 2030 must remain within the Government agreed carbon budgets. For this to be achieved, it is crucial that Ireland is put on a downwards emissions trajectory in 2023.

The Climate Change Advisory Council has submitted 34 recommendations to the public consultation process of the review of the National Adaptation Framework.
